My lovely wife got me a new bike camera. It is an Insta360X3 and I have been learning to use it over the past few weeks. (there is always some lag where writing blog posts is concerned). I have wanted to do some Vlogging for some time. While blogging is ok, and I enjoy getting the stuff in my head onto paper, there is a lot more engagement with video so I figured I would give it a try.
I mounted the camera with the motorcycle kit that came with the camera, and took come footage. Now this is a 360 action camera. With regards the editing, I was figuring things out so its not great and I am only using the integrated camera mics so no voice on this video, but here is what I came up with.
First Camera Test
The second camera test was about the same as the first, but the editing got a little better as I now had a better idea how to edit the 360 video.
Second Camera Test
I use a Cardo to talk to Cat as we ride so I did spend some time trying to figure out if I could use the Cardo as my helmet mic, but the Cardo Packtalk and the Insta360X3 are not compatible. This means I have to use a radio mic if I keep the camera on the bike, or I can use a wired mic if I mount the camera on my helmet.
Daisy's Last Ride
So in this video I test to see how the video is with the Insta360 mounted to my helmet. I use a Chin mount to affix the helmet. Other than still not being able to record my spoke audio, it worked well. I was pleasantly surprised how well the image stabilization works.
I managed to find an inexpensive wired mic that works with the Insta360x3 by connecting to its USB-C port, I tested it at home and it seemed to work just fine so my next move was to test it with the helmet. I fixed the camera to the helmet and mounted the mic inside the helmet next to the Cardo mic and went for a ride!
With the helmet Mic
And it works! I can vlog away to my hearts content. If I record Freddy Dobbs style, using my iPhone for a lot of the spoken footage, I should be able to put together a decent video. That is what I have to try next.
Oh, and welcome to my YouTube Channel :)
